How Much Traffic Does AI Search Actually Send? What the 2026 Data Says

Short answer: about 1 visit in 100. Longer answer: that one visit is worth more than most, the "converts 7x better" headlines don't hold up across a wide sample, and most of the tools you'd use to measure it were built in the last four months.
Is generative engine optimization (GEO) worth paying for yet? That's the question behind every GEO proposal, and it deserves a numbers answer. Here is what the data says, where it's thin, and how to check your own site before you decide.
How much traffic comes from AI search?
The largest public dataset is Conductor's 2026 AEO/GEO Benchmarks Report. Across 1,215 enterprise domains and 3.3 billion sessions between May and September 2025, AI referrals were 1.08% of all website traffic. Information technology sites were highest at 2.80%. Communication services were lowest at 0.25%. Growth ran roughly 1% month over month.
Siege Media's smaller study of 78 sites, pulled from GA4 between January and May 2026, found AI at 0.2% to 3% of sessions on most sites. Ahrefs published its own number in June 2025: 0.5% of traffic.
So the range is roughly half a percent to three percent, with one percent as the honest midpoint. For a site doing 10,000 visits a month, that's about 100 visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and the rest combined.
Two things that number leaves out. First, it counts only clicks that arrive with a readable referrer. Patrick Stox's GA4 measurement guide puts the share of AI visits that arrive with no referrer at all - and land in Direct - at 35% to 70%. Whatever your analytics shows is a floor. Second, clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode aren't in that 1% at all. They're reported as ordinary organic search, and Conductor's sample of 21.9 million U.S. searches found an AI Overview on 25.11% of them.
Which AI engines actually send the clicks?
ChatGPT. Everything else is a rounding error by comparison.
Conductor puts ChatGPT at 87.4% of AI referral traffic. Previsible's analysis of 6.77 million LLM sessions through May 2026 puts it at 92.4% and still gaining share. Perplexity, which looked like the challenger in early 2025, peaked in March of that year and had fallen 61% by May 2026. Claude passed it around March 2026. Gemini is a quiet second, growing steadily but small for brands outside Google's own ecosystem.
Practically: if you only have time to check one thing, check what ChatGPT says about your category.
Does AI traffic convert better than organic?
Yes, but by less than the headlines say.
The big numbers are real, and they come from specific places. Ahrefs reported that 0.5% of its visitors came from AI search and produced 12.1% of its signups - a 23x conversion premium over organic. Similarweb's clickstream panel put AI referrals at a 7.1% conversion rate, second only to paid search. Those two figures showed up in a lot of budget decks.
Siege Media tested them against 78 sites with usable conversion tracking across five industries. The median AI-to-organic conversion ratio was 1.26x. AI matched or beat organic on 72% of sites and beat direct on 71%. Finance led at 1.67x. Consumer and local services came in at 1.29x. B2B SaaS was 1.05x. Ecommerce was 1.01x - a coin flip.
A 26% premium is still a premium. Organic search is the most proven acquisition channel most businesses have, and AI traffic edges it on nearly three-quarters of sites. But it is not a different species of visitor. It's a somewhat better-qualified version of the same one, because the person asked a specific question and the model narrowed their options before they clicked.
One more caution from the same study: revenue per session was mixed. AI out-earned traditional traffic on fewer than half the sites with reliable revenue tracking. A higher conversion rate and higher revenue are not the same claim.
Why the 23x number and the 1.26x number are both true
Sample. Ahrefs is a SaaS tool that ChatGPT recommends by name when someone asks which SEO software to buy. A visitor arriving from that conversation has already been sold. Similarweb's panel skews toward high-intent retail. Siege's sample is broad and reports medians, which flatten the outliers.
Your business will land somewhere on that spread depending on one thing: whether the questions people ask AI about your category end in a purchase decision. "Best plumber near me for a slab leak" does. "How does a tankless water heater work" doesn't. Local service businesses sit on the good side of that line, which matches the 1.29x Siege found for the category.
How do you measure AI traffic on your own site?
Three places to look, each with a gap.
GA4: the AI Assistant channel
On May 13, 2026, Google added an "AI Assistant" channel to GA4's default channel group. When a session's referrer matches a recognized assistant, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and routes it there. Google's definition names ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot, and Grok. Nothing to configure.
Three limits. It isn't retroactive, so history before rollout stays in Referral. Perplexity isn't on the list and still lands in Referral. And it only catches sessions that arrive with a referrer intact - stripped referrers from mobile apps and in-app browsers fall into Direct. If you want Perplexity and Claude in the same bucket, build a custom channel group with a source-matches-regex rule and place it above Referral in the order, because GA4 stops at the first match.
Then open an Exploration and cross-tab session source against landing page and key events. That's the report that tells you which pages AI actually sends people to, and whether they do anything once they arrive. The channel summary alone won't.
Search Console: the generative AI performance report
Google launched this on June 3, 2026 and rolled it out to every property worldwide on August 31. The report shows impressions for your pages inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device, and date.
It does not show clicks. It does not show queries. For our own property, the report shows 10,967 impressions across 174 pages over the last three months, 2,607 of them for one SEO service page - and nothing about whether anyone clicked or what they typed. Google has said more metrics may follow, and the UK's competition regulator has pushed for click data, but as of this writing the report answers "am I showing up?" and stops there. Our Search Console guide covers the rest of the tool.
Branded search and direct
This is the one nobody's dashboard captures. A prospect asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, doesn't click the citation, and searches your business name two days later. GA4 books that as organic or direct. The AI conversation that made the decision gets no credit.
The workaround is indirect: watch branded query impressions in Search Console alongside your AI referral trend. If both climb together, the AI channel is doing more than its click count shows. It's not proof. It's the best signal available right now.
So is GEO worth paying for?
Let's be candid about the arithmetic. At 1% of traffic converting at 1.26x organic, AI referrals are worth about 1.3% of your organic conversions today. Nobody should reorganize a marketing budget around 1.3%.
Here's why we still do the work, and why we don't sell it as a separate line item.
The engines pull from the same index that ranks your pages in regular Google. Conductor's data shows AI referrals growing at roughly 1% a month; Previsible measured 9.9x growth in LLM sessions over 19 months. The pages that get cited are, overwhelmingly, the pages that already rank - clear answers, real expertise, sources named, a business that's visibly who it says it is. That's SEO. The GEO-specific additions are narrow: keeping the facts about your business consistent everywhere a model might read them, answering the specific questions people ask assistants, and tracking citations so you know when it's working.
We see the same pattern in the visibility data we pull for clients. On September 7 we ran Semrush's AI Visibility report on two accounts: a regional personal-injury law firm and an industrial B2B manufacturer. Both draw favorable sentiment when an AI engine mentions them - 82% and 88% - and both are mentioned rarely. Over ten weeks the law firm held 0.5% share of voice in non-branded prompts for its practice area and city, against 5.3% and 4.4% for the two largest advertisers in its market. The manufacturer held 3.3%, behind a category leader at 13.6%.
In both cases the engines cited competitor sites far more often than the client's own, and for the firm, legal directories led everything. Its domain was cited 7 times in the period; the top directory, hundreds. Two accounts is an anecdote, not a study, but the shape of the gap is consistent: it isn't a content problem. It's the third-party authority problem SEO has been working on for twenty years, and the fix is the same work.
That's why our GEO services are part of the same organic program as our SEO agency work, not a second invoice. If someone is quoting you a standalone GEO retainer on top of SEO, ask what specifically they'll do that the SEO engagement doesn't already cover. The list should be short. (llms.txt is usually on it. It shouldn't be.)
Where we'd say no: if you're an ecommerce store with thin margins and no category-level content, the 1.01x ratio says AI traffic will behave like your existing organic traffic. Fix the conversion rate first. GEO won't rescue it.
What to do this month
- Confirm the AI Assistant channel is populating in GA4. If it isn't, check whether your property received the rollout and build the custom channel group as a backstop.
- Open the generative AI report in Search Console. Note which pages carry impressions. Those are your citation candidates - they've already been chosen once.
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity the five questions your best customers ask before they call. Record who gets named. Repeat monthly. This is the closest thing to a rank tracker the channel has. Semrush's AI Visibility toolkit automates it; the manual version costs nothing but an hour a month.
- Cross-tab AI sessions against landing pages and conversions. Find the one or two pages doing the work and make them better before writing anything new.
- Watch branded impressions. If they rise with AI referrals, you're getting credit you can't see.
If you'd like us to run those five steps against your site, start with a free SEO audit. And if you're weighing a proposal that treats GEO as its own budget line, send it over. We'll tell you plainly what's in it that SEO isn't.
